I was warned about Paris. It smells, they told me, seedy as hell, nothing like the movies, dirty. I suppose they were right but that is not how I saw her. It is a city that is lived in, a city that gets used. Paris is a long-term relationship after you’ve gotten past presenting the Friday night date version of yourself. It is trackpants, ugg boots, staying in watching a movie and ordering takeaway. Occasionally getting dressed up and wandering the streets of Montmartre together, meandering down lanes that hold memories and stories, remembering who you both once were. Returning home, kicking off the heels and feeling the comfort of settling in to each other, grateful for the history you share. It is nothing like the movies. Paris is real.
